It was the year 1976 when the 42nd Amendment act was brought to impose ten fundamental duties on Indian citizens. The necessity of the fundamental duties was felt during the emergency from 1975 to 1977. These duties were added to remind Indian citizens of their responsibility to make India a better country. There are 11 fundamental duties of Indian citizens that go like the following.
1. Every Indian must follow the constitution and respect the National flag and Anthem.
2. Every Indian must respect freedom fighters and follow the ideals that inspired the struggle for freedom.
3. Every Indian has to ensure that they do not disrespect the country’s sentiment and protect India’s unity, integrity, and sovereignty.
4. Every Indian should always be ready to do national service and defend the country when they are expected to do so.
5. Every Indian must promote brotherhood between different groups of people and respect the dignity of women.
6. Every Indian must play their part in respecting and preserving Indian culture and heritage.
7. Every Indian should have compassion for living creatures and must play their part in protecting and saving the natural environment, lakes, forests, wildlife, plants, and rivers, for instance.
8. Every Indian should have humanity and scientific temperament.
9. Every Indian is expected not to harm public property; instead, safeguard it and stay away from violence.
10. It is the responsibility of Indian citizens to strive toward excellence in every sphere of activity in order to take the country to new heights.
11. The last fundamental duty is for the parents to ensure that they provide education to their six to fourteen years old child.

Fundamental duties are not as exhaustive as fundamental rights. For instance, the fundamental duties of Indian citizens do not tell them to cast a vote, pay taxes, do family planning, etc. These duties arouse feelings of moral as well as civic duties.
Moral duties are respecting noble ideals, developing humanism, and having compassion for living beings. There is no legal sanction against those who do not follow the Fundamental duties. However, parliament is free to take strict actions by bringing suitable legislation.
